Saying that craps is a casino game played with dice is like telling people that Mount Rushmore is a sculpture of some dead guys. Both claims are true, but neither one really suggests the intensity of what people experience when they make the trip to a casino or South Dakota.

Craps Bets

Craps bets are the driving force behind craps action. The game would be pretty dull if everybody just stood around waiting for an outcome.

Craps bets are based on the roll of a pair of dice. Once a shooter has established a point, s/he will, on average, roll eight more times before settling the pass line bets one way or another (by making the point or sevening out). Fortunately for adrenaline junkies, craps only gets more exciting after the point has been established.

The Most Basic Bets in Craps

A chunk of the craps table is reserved for come/don’t come bets. These are essentially the same as pass/don’t pass bets-except that they always treat the next roll as a come-out roll.

Let’s say you’re the shooter and you started by putting $5 on the pass line, but you didn’t roll a natural (a 7 or 11). Instead, your come-out roll was a 4, so to make your point (and win your pass line bet), you need to roll another 4 before you roll a 7. Since you are twice as likely to roll a 7 as you are to roll a 4, you may already feel your $5 bet on the pass line slipping away.

You’re not allowed to remove that $5 bet, but you can take the sting out of sevening out by putting $5 on come. A come bet treats the next roll as a come-out roll. If you throw a 7, then you win your come bet at the same time that you lose your pass line bet (because as far as the pass line is concerned, you just sevened out instead of making your point, but as far as the come bet is concerned, you just rolled a natural).

Essentially, come/don’t come bets allow you to play embedded rounds of craps within a single round, each of which can have a different point than the one established by the shooter’s real come-out roll.

Don’t Come Bets

Let’s return to the earlier scenario with the shooter taking a slightly different approach. After putting $5 on the pass line, he rolls a 4. He doesn’t feel good about his chances of making his point before sevening out, but he also doesn’t feel a natural coming on the next roll. He decides to hedge by putting $5 on don’t come.

He rolls a 10, which doesn’t settle either bet. He still needs to roll a 4 before a 7 to win his pass line bet, but the point for the come/don’t come bet that he just placed has now been established as a 10. If he had placed a come bet, then he would want to see a 10 before a 7, but since he placed a don’t come bet, he now wants to seven out before rolling a 10. He is as likely to roll a 4 as he is to roll a 10, but still twice as likely to roll a 7 as either of those two established points. If his next roll is a 7, then he loses the pass line bet (of course), but he wins the don’t come bet because he sevened out.

Getting involved in too many come/don’t come bets can easily leave players confused about which outcomes are desirable-but don’t assume that these bets are bad just because they can be confusing. In fact, come/don’t come bets have the same low house edge (

Finding the Best Craps Strategy

After you select a good casino and brush your skills by playing free craps games online, it is time to get familiar with the best strategy for craps. Adopting a craps betting strategy will help you find out more about the game and star playing like a real professional. At first, it may seem intimidating and challenging, but understanding and following the best craps strategy that functions perfectly will make a significant difference.

The essential wager each craps player should understand and know is the so-called pass line bet, which is done as you put your chips directly on that line just before the come out roll. In case the shooter manages to roll 7 or 11, then the wager pays off an even amount of cash. Your bet becomes losing in case the shooter rolls 2, 3 or 12, and this situation is known as “craps out”. When do you win? Your wager is winning when the shooter rolls any other number. In this case, the rolled number turns into a box point, and you win if the shooter rolls the same number before they make the so-called “seven out“.

The pass line bet has a house edge of just 1.41%. The opposing wager is the “don’t pass” bet and its main characteristic is the lower house edge. However, a wise recommendation is not to use this particular wager because it will unquestionably get you some enemies at the playing table. You can practice the bet when playing casino craps online because you do not risk experiencing the anger of other players.

As soon as the point gets established, you are able to take odds. Taking odds is an extra wager, which typically is the best possible bet in the casino. Why? The answer is that the wager pays of actual odds as there is no house edge this time. However, casinos put restrictions as to the amount gamblers can wager in this situation. The majority of traditional and online casinos allow 3-4-5x odds, where players can bet three times as much as the pass line bet you have made on 4 or 10; four times as much as the pass line bet on 5 or 9; and five times as much as the pass line wager on 6 or 8. If your best craps strategy is to continually practice the pass line bet and the max out the odds, then the house edge drops to just 0.374%. The playing table does not have a free place for the wager and gamblers should place it as they put the chips behind the pass line wager. You should position the bet after the establishment of the point.

Initially, it is wise to master this best strategy for craps and get more experienced and confident in your game. Then you can proceed further on and expand the craps betting strategy by including the come odds. This wager is similar to the one we described above but the difference is that gamblers make a bet before any other roll except the come out rolling. The subsequent roll is the come out one. Punters need to put their chips on the come line exactly before the making of the roll to initiate . Taking odds here is identical to the other wager we discussed and the same numbers apply. After the establishment of the point, you should toss the chips and announce “odds on the 5” or any other number, depending on the point. Then the dealer will put the chip to the particular point.

In the beginning, casino craps may seem quite challenging, and it may take some time to get experience in the game. However, you need to find and adopt the best craps strategy and this will dramatically enhance your skills and will boost your chances to win. Following the best craps betting system will give you an advantage over your opponents. Thus, your game will gradually become better, and you will get more confident and fruitful.

Craps Strategy 2

The following craps strategy will give you the best odds of winning. Craps has one of the lowest house edges against you of any casino game, but only if you make the right bets and play with the right craps strategy. In fact, with one type of bet (which you will soon learn), you play even with the house, meaning that the house has a zero edge. This is the only casino game where this is true and our craps strategy will show you how. This strategy combined with our tips and rules will have you rolling wins at your favorite online casino site in no time.

However don’t get tempted by all those fancy bets in the middle of the table, they have high payoffs but they have one of the worst odds of all casino games. Stick with our craps strategy, play only the bets with good odds, avoid the sucker bets and you’ll have the best chance of winning.

Here’s an example of the three types of outcomes that result when a new shooter plays and how you should bet.

Assume new shooter is getting ready to make the come out roll and you make a $10 bet (or whatever amount you want) on the pass line. The shooter rolls a 7 or 11 on the come out. You win $10, the amount of your bet.

You bet $10 again on the pass line and the shooter makes a come out roll again. This time a 3 is rolled (the player “craps out”). You lose your $10 pass line bet.

You bet another $10 and the shooter makes his third come out roll (remember, each shooter continues to roll until he sevens out after making a point). This time a 4 is rolled – one of the place numbers or “points”. You now want to take an odds bet, so you place $10 directly behind your pass line bet to indicate you are taking the odds. The shooter continues to roll the dice until a 4 is rolled (the point is made), at which time you win $10 on your pass line bet, and $20 on your odds bet (remember, a 4 is paid at 2 to 1 odds), for a total win of $30. Take your chips off the table and get ready to bet again.

However, if a 7 is rolled before the point number (in this case, before the 4), you lose both your $10 pass line bet and your $10 odds bet.

And that’s all there is to it! You simply make you pass line bet, take odds if a point is rolled on the come out, and then wait for either the point or a 7 to be rolled. Ignore all the other confusion and sucker bets. You have the best bet in the casino and are playing wisely. You can combine these craps tips with a money management system such as the Small Wins System or the The Stan’s System.

Odds bets can be made any time after a come out point is rolled. You don’t have to make them right away. However, you’d be foolish not to make an odds bet as soon as possible considering it’s the best bet on the table. However, you are permitted to make, withdraw, or reinstate an odds bet anytime after the come out and before a 7 is rolled.

When you win an odds bet, be sure to take your chips off the table. Otherwise, they are considered to be automatically “off” on the next to come out and will not count as other odds bet unless you specifically tell the dealer that you want them to be “working”. But in a fast-moving and loud game, your request may not be heard, so it’s better to simply take your winnings off the table and bet again with the next comes out.

The 119

$119 profit from a $12 bet, locking profits after 1 successful roll.

Bet $12 on the 6 or the 8 (just one of them). After it hits, regress it to $6.
You have now locked a $8 profit and you can relax. Continuing on the 6 or 8, if
it hits a second time, increase it back to $12, taking the $1 remainder from the
table. Then if successful double it up for 2 further hits of your chosen number
(6 or 8), and then remove all bets.

The progression would look like this

  • $12 – paid $14 (regress to $6)
  • $6 – paid $7 (remove $1)
  • $12 – paid $14 (remove $2)
  • $24 – paid $28 (remove $4)
  • $48 – paid $56 (remove all)

If successful you will profit $14+$6+$1+$2+$4+$104-$12 = $119. If you hit the
number first just one time, you are guaranteed a $8 profit (then subsequently
increased to $9, then to $11, and then to $15). If 7 comes first in the first
hand you lose $12.

In summary, you first look to lock a quick 1 hit profit. Then you parlay what is
left hoping for a hot shooter, with an aim of reaching $119 and then removing

A bit of fun if nothing else. If the shooter hits a few of your number, you can
start to smell that $119.

Delayed Odds

Start off with a passline bet, and keep playing the pass line until a Point
number is established. Now don’t take the odds on the passline, but instead just
bet the Come box. Once a number is established via the come, now take the full
odds on both the pass line bet and the Come number bet. Keep rolling until you
hit the Point number, or seven out. Take the Come bet number down afterwards (if
it hasn’t already been hit along the way).

This strategy has the benefit of protecting the passline bet until 2 numbers are
established with odds. This happens because if a seven is rolled you lose the
passline bet but win the Come box bet.

If successful (hitting both), off of a $5 base bet with 3x/4x/5x odds, you will
profit $70. If you hit just the Point (not the Come number) you will profit $35.

Against the Point

With this craps strategy you are betting against the shooter, or more
specifically against the Point being made.

Start by betting $30 on the Don’t Pass line. If/when a point number is
established you have cleared your first hurdle of avoiding sevens and elevens on
the come out roll.

Now make place bets on the inside numbers, minus the point number. In other
words bet $10 on 5, $12 on 6, $12 on 8, and $10 on 9. But if any of those
numbers are the point number don’t bet it.

If you hit 3 of your place numbers (when you have bet four), then take the rest
of the bet down.

  • If any of your place bet numbers come up before a 7 you will make a profit (or
more accurately, you will not make a loss).
  • If a 2 or 3 of your place numbers come up before a 7 you will make a good
  • If a seven comes up before anything you will make a loss of between $2 and $14
  • If a point number comes up before you hit anything, you will lose $30
  • If 3 of your numbers come up before the point number, you will make a profit

Example. Lets say the point number is the 5.

If the shooter hits a 6 and then a 7, you will win $14 on the 6, and then $30 on
the 7. And you will lose $12 from the 8, and $10 from the 9. This is a net
profit of $22.

If the shooter hits an 8, then a 9, then a 7, you will win $14 + $14 + $30. And
you will lose $12 (from the 6). Net profit would be $46.

Craps Strategy — Craps Tips — Craps Betting Strategies

This is an article about craps strategy. It’s meant to provide general craps tips for players who want to have more fun playing craps and minimize the house edge. We’re unaware of any craps strategies which can turn the house edge from negative into positive, although dice control proponents claim that controlled throws can accomplish this. (We have a separate section explaining dice control in detail, but I’m not convinced that it’s a workable craps strategy.)

Craps Strategies — Craps Tips

The first step in playing craps with a strategy is understanding the basics of the game. People unfamiliar with craps who walk up to a game that’s already in progress probably think they’ve found a bunch of people speaking a completely different language. The best way to avoid feeling like you’ve wandered into a foreign country is to read up on the various craps bets available, play some craps online for practice, and take one of the many free craps classes that are offered throughout the day at various casinos. I did a ton of research before writing this site, and I still benefitted greatly from the casino class on craps.

Craps Strategies — Craps Tips

Good Craps Bets

The best bet in a craps game on the come out roll is the pass line bet. The house edge on this bet is only 1.41%. Most of the other bets on the table offer much worse odds than this. If you’re a beginner, or if you just want to minimize your risk, stick with this bet for starters. (If you want to split hairs, the actual best bet is the don’t pass bet, which has a house edge of 1.36%, but most people don’t like it when you root against them. And I’m not usually willing to antagonize the shooter over a 0.05% mathematical advantage.)

The best in a craps game after the come out roll is the odds bet. Once a point has been determined by the come out roll, you can make an additional bet that’s a multiple of your pass line bet. This multiple varies from casino to casino, but 2X is pretty common these days.

The brilliant thing about taking the odds bet is that it pays out at true odds. In other words, the house has a 0 edge on the odds bet. You should always take the odds bet.

When you combine the potential win from the odds bet with the relatively low house edge of 1.41% on the come out roll, your overall disadvantage diminishes dramatically. And the more you’re allowed to bet when taking the odds bet, the lower your disadvantage becomes. If you’re allowed to take 2X odds, the overall house edge becomes 0.61% instead of 1.41%.

If you’re lucky enough to find a casino which offers 100X odds on this bet, you can reduce the house edge to 0.02%, which is about as close to even money as you’ll ever see at a table game.

Bad Craps Bets

While the odds bet and the pass and don’t pass bets have really low house edges, some of the bets available at the craps table offer terrible odds. For example, the house edge on the «Big Six» bet is 9.1%. (A «Big Six» bet is a bet that a six will be rolled before a seven.) But a 9.1% house edge is worse than the edge on a roulette game. Those are terrible odds.

The «Big 8» bet is just as bad, also offering a 9.1% house edge. Avoiding these two bets, the «Big 8» and the «Big 6», isn’t just good craps strategy, it’s common sense.

Believe it or not, worse craps bets are available. The «Hard 4» and «Hard 10» bets offer a house edge of 11%+. That’s twice as bad as a rouletteВ bet. And roulette offers one of the lowest house edges in the casino. One of the best craps tips you’ll ever receive is to avoid these four craps bets.

But guess what. Still worse odds can be found at the craps table in the form of proposition bets. A proposition bet at the craps table is a bet that something in particular will happen on the very next roll. (Most bets ride until the round is over.) The proposition bets that a 2 or 12 will be rolled next offer the worst odds at the table. The house edge is 13.9% on these bets. If you’re looking for a worthwhile use for your money, and you’re just desperate to give it away, this is a good way to do so, and fast.

Specific Craps Betting Strategies

Below we will talk a little more in depth about some specific craps
strategies that you may wish to give a go.

Regression Strategies

Regression Strategies are a good, often simply and effective, way to play Craps.
They involve locking up profits by reducing bets after a win. So you keep money
in action but you also get money off the table quickly/safely. A good example of
this is as follows:

Regress half on 6 and 8.

Make a place bet of $12 on the 6 and $12 on the 8

If one of them hits before a 7, you will be paid $14. Then reduce the two bets
down to $6 on each number. So at this point you have taken $14+$12=$26 from the
table and you are $2 up. If 6 or 8 hit again before a seven then get paid and
clear both bets. ie you will get $7+$6+$6 = $19.

Overall you profited $26+$19-$24 = $21.

You can extend this strategy into a triple regression, starting with $36. You
first bet $18 on 6 and $18 on 8. After a win you regress to $12 and $12, and
after a second win you regress to $6 and $6, and you then clear the board.

Overall on a successful run you will profit $21+$12+$14+$12+$7+$12-$36 = $42

Readers may be familiar with the Martingale system from roulette, which involves
betting increased amounts on even money bets until you win. Well we can do
exactly the same thing in craps.

Once a point is established, we start by betting $5 on the field
(2,3,4,9,10,11,12). If it wins, great, we wait until after another come out roll
and start again at $5. If we lose again we wait, but next time we bet $10. And
so on upwards (after losing bets), doubling each time.

It is best to set a cap at $155 (ie $5 + $10 + $20 + $40 + $80).

  • Chances of us hitting a field number on any give throw is 16/36 = 0.4444
  • Chances of us not hitting one on throw ($5 level) = 0.5555
  • Chances of us not hitting one in 2 throws ($10 level) = 0.3086
  • Chances us us not hitting one in 3 throws ($20 level) = 0.1714
  • Chances us us not hitting one in 4 throws ($40 level) = 0.0952
  • Chances us us not hitting one in 5 throws ($80 level) = 0.0529.

So we go looking to make a quick $5, we are 95% likely we will be successful.

Obviously this does carry risk, so set a strict limit beforehand of how far you
will go up to.

Bankroll Management for Craps Players

Another important craps strategy topic is that of
bankroll management. You should always keep a big enough
bankroll that you can play craps for as long as you have
planned. For example, if you are going to Las Vegas for
a weekend to play craps, you need to bring enough money
to last the whole trip. Even though you might get lucky
and win, you still need to sustain any long losing
streaks that may come up.

We recommend keeping at least fifty of your total
bets on hand at all times. So, if you are making $10
bets and expect to play for a while, keep at least $500
at the table. Even though you aren’t likely to have a
fifty bet down swing, you never want to bust.

Craps Bets

As we mentioned before, the best craps strategy is
simply to put your money on the best bet. The «best bet»
is the one with the lowest house edge. You can easily
calculate the house edge on each bet by comparing the
payout to the likelihood that you will win. We’ve done
all the math for you, so check out the house edges for
the best craps bets below:

Bet House Edge
Pass Line 1.41%
Don’t Pass Line 1.4%
Come Bet 1.41%
Don’t Come Bet 1.4%

The rest of the craps bets are poorer propositions.
By looking at the numbers above, we can see that the
don’t pass line
and the
don’t come bets
are the best,
carrying a house edge of only 1.4%. That means for every
dollar you place on those bets, you will receive $0.986
back. Not too bad considering that most

slot machines carry a house edge of 10% or more.

Laying the Odds

Now we know how to get the house edge to 1.4%, but
wouldn’t you love to know how to reduce the house edge
even further? There’s a technique you can use that
reduces the house edge down to 0.01%, and it is called
«laying the odds»*.

*If you aren’t sure what «laying the odds»
means, make sure to read our «» article before reading on.

If you make a don’t pass line bet, you have the
option of «laying the odds», which means you increase
your bet that a seven will be rolled. Some casinos don’t
allow players to lay the odds, while other casinos allow
you to lay the odds up to 100x your don’t pass line bet.

If you lay the odds 100x your original don’t pass
line bet, the house edge is reduced to 0.01%. Laying the
odds is an even money wager, so the more money you put
on it, the closer your bet is to an even money

Casino Gambling Game Rules and Strategy Guide
May 20, 2020 – 04:33 pm

So you wanna beat craps eh? Good call. Unlike other games in the casino, craps offers bets that reduce the house advantage to nearly nothing… now if only the dice would fall the way we want them to.

Best Bets

One of the best bets in the casino is taking odds on Pass Line bets. This is one of the few places (much like a double down in BlackJack) where the player has the opportunity to maximize their bet based on play that has already occured. First of all lets talk about dice combinations to get an idea of general probablilities or Ways.

The column on the left is the possible roll, the row accross the top is the number of ways that roll can be made using standard six-sided dice (none of that Dungeons and Dragons stuff here…). Here’s a breakdown:

There is one way to make aces and twelve.
There are two ways to make the three and eleven.
There are three ways to make the four and ten.
There are four ways to make the five and nine.
There are five ways to make the six and eight.
There are six ways to make the seven.

As you can see there is more ways to make a seven than any other number, therefore statistically, the seven will come out more than any other number. This works in the players favor on the Come Out roll if they have a Pass Line bet and if they are betting a Come bet after the point has already been made.

Possible Betting Strategies

There are infinite ways to play craps and every player develops systems or ideas which they think will be the key to winning at craps. No real betting system has been proven, since luck plays such a huge role (roll?) in the game. We offer these possible betting strategies to get you thinking about the game in ways that maybe you haven’t, not as a cure for bad luck or a sure fire way to get rich.

Strategy #1 — Pass Line with Max Odds

One of the most used betting strategies is to bet the Pass Line and take advantage of Maximum odds after the point has been established (depending on the number rolled). Pass Line bets have virtually no house advantage. If the point is a 6 or 8 the odds pay 6-5, if the point is 5 or 9 the odds pay 3-2, and if the point is a 4 or 10 the odds pay 2-1. This is one of the best bets in the house.

Strategy #2 — Pass Line with Place Bets

Some players like to play Pass Line bets (with odds) reinforced by Place Bets on 6 and/or 8 (if the point is 6 or 8, move one of the Place Bets to a 5 or 9). This covers the three most probable rolls other than a Seven.

Strategy #3 — Pass Line with Odds + Come Bets with Odds

We’ve coined a term for this type of bet: Comesurance. Let’s say that the Come Out roll establishes a point of 6. The player throws a bet to the Come bar and on the shooters next roll they Seven out (how many times have you seen that happen?). Here the player loses their original Pass Line bet, but wins on the Come’s come out roll. You still lose your odds and whatever else is out there, but its a little insurance policy. If the player rolls a 9 on the second roll instead of the 7, the Come bet moves to the 9 and the player is offered the opportunity to place odds on the Come bet as well… also with almost no house advantage. The player can continue to throw Come bets and odds out, covering all the numbers with Odds (or not) and recouping their Pass Line bet if the shooter rolls 7. Of course, if the shooter throws Craps on the Come, come out roll the player loses. Its a bit more complex, but we’ve seen some pretty large winnings using this strategy.

Possible Strategy #4 — Limited Positive Progression Hardways

Throw down $4 for 4, 6, 8 and 10 hardways. Hit once, press it. Hit again take it. Its a long shot absolutely, but we’ve seen it work on occasion. You can vary this to a press/press/take scenario, but you’ll really be pressing your luck.

The Best Strategy

Truly the best strategy any player can make is to learn from a master either by joining them the next time they play or absorbing the knowledge in the VegasTripping Craps Players Library. The VT Library contains handpicked books for all craps skill levels — beginner, advanced and expert craps players.

A $10 investment will yield a lifetime of fun and knowledge at the tables. It may not show in your bankroll instantly, but you will recognize bad scenarios, bad bets, and enable you to play smarter for longer… enabling you to WORK THE TABLE when that 2 hour hot roll comes and everyone cashes in.

Крепс (Крэпс, Craps)
